Sarah Vaala, PhD

Senior Fellow

Dr. Vaala is an Assistant Professor at the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication at High Point University. Her research focuses on the diverse educational and health implications of media in the lives of children and adolescents, as well as the ways that parents, teachers, and caregivers perceive of and make decisions about children’s media use. She completed her Ph.D. in Communication Studies at the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. As a graduate student, Sarah worked on an RTL-funded research team which examined young children’s television-viewing and language learning. Sarah served as the 2011-2012 Joan Ganz Cooney Center research fellow, and is currently directing an undergraduate research scholars program at High Point University in partnership with the Cooney Center.
