SUMMARY:Educational Media Use in America: A Breakthrough Learning Forum
DESCRIPTION:On January 24\, the Joan Ganz Cooney Center will host a forum featuring a cross-section of leaders from education\, media\, research\, policy\, and philanthropy at a forum in New York City as we release the results of the first national survey on children’s educational media use. \n\nConducted by the Cooney Center and renowned children’s media researcher Vicky Rideout\, the nationally representative survey of nearly 1\,600 parents of children ages 2-10 will provide a provocative platform for a day of action and discussion. Among the survey’s findings that will be discussed are:\n\n	How much of children’s media time is devoted to educational content;\n	How that varies across platforms\, from television to computers\, video games\, and mobile;\n	Which platforms parents think their children have learned from the most;\n	What obstacles impede children’s educational media use;\n	How much time children spend reading in print and electronic formats\, and why some parents don’t want their children using e-books; and\n	How all of these issues vary based on children’s age\, gender\, and socio-economic status.\n\nThe forum will focus on the practical implications of the national study. Speakers will include FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel; Debra Sanchez\, Senior Vice President for Education and Children’s Content Creation at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; Linda Burch\, Chief Education Officer for Common Sense Media; Dale Kunkel\, Professor of Communication at Arizona University; and David Kleeman\, SVP\, Insights Programs and PlayVangelist\, PlayCollective. Learn more about the Families and Media Project.\n\nView agenda ».\n\nThis event is open by invitation only. SUMMARY:Breakthrough Learning in a Digital Age\, the Cooney Centers Annual Leadership Forum
DESCRIPTION:Forty years after the “War on Poverty” and twenty-five years after “A Nation at Risk\,” a new forum was designed to advance a paradigm for learning that harnesses the largely untapped potential of digital media\n\nBreakthrough Learning in a Digital Age is an ongoing forum that convenes thought leaders in science and technology\, informal and formal education\, entertainment media\, research\, philanthropy\, and policy to create a new strategy for scaling-up effective models of teaching and learning for children. The forum showcases cutting-edge research — proven and promising models that are challenging decision makers in key sectors to help “refresh and reboot” American global leadership in education. Last year’s forum demonstrated two dozen creative projects that have breakthrough potential at a special “technology playground” that was established at the Googleplex. Children from Global Kids\, and BAVC participated in the tech playground.\n\nAt the forum\, the Cooney Center unveiled the Cooney Center Prizes\, a national challenge competition designed to encourage innovation in children’s media through digital media. In addition\, the Cooney Center released a new white paper on literacy and learning in a new media age\, The Digital Promise: Transforming Learning with Innovative Uses of Technology by Michael H. Levine and Jeanne Wellings.\n\nThe forum was hosted by Google\, Inc.\, in cooperation with forum founders: the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop\, Common Sense Media\, and the MacArthur Foundation.\n\n Check out exclusive video interviews and photos.
