SUMMARY:Webinar: Betting on Elmo\, Martha\, and Lena: The Promise of Technology to Reach & Support Parents in Creating Literacy and Language Rich Environments
DESCRIPTION:Parents are too often an untapped asset in building young children’s pathways to literacy and overall success. They\, more than anyone else\, can have the greatest impact on children reading proficiently by the end of third grade when they create literacy- and language-rich environments\, a key indicator of school readiness. Technology can be a powerful tool to reach the numbers of parents we need to reach. But how might we better use technology in ways that promote science-based learning and development that will promote both deeper human relationships and stronger 21st century skills? What are the best technology tools and how do we get these into the hands of low-income families? What models can we learn from? And how do we measure and track our efforts? In this webinar\, we will view and discuss several 3-5 minute videos that spotlight how pioneering early childhood professionals are using technology to reach families.\n\nJoin Lisa Guernsey\, Director: Learning Technologies & Director: Early Education Initiative\, and Michael Levine\, Executive Director\, Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop in this interactive webinar hosted by the Campaign for Grade Level Reading to learn about what research tells us about the promise and challenges of today’s ubiquitous media and technology environment. Based on the findings in their forthcoming book\, Tap\, Click Read: Growing Readers in a World of Screens\, they will recommend effective\, modern ways to support parents\, educators and other community leaders in creating literacy- and language-rich environments.\n\nRegister for the webinar here\n\n

SUMMARY:Playing to Learn: Lessons From Game Design Gurus
DESCRIPTION:How can the engaging power of games be used to promote playful learning? Three design experts share lessons learned from applying the latest research to produce games that are both popular and transformative. Whether the aim is to tap into a parent-focused consumer market\, enter the formal K-12 space\, support informal spaces like museums and libraries or just build a more effective user experience\, this session will address the potential for games and learning. Panelists will take us behind the scenes of successful groups like LEGO and Nickelodeon to offer best practices for research gathering\, iterative design and user feedback. After sharing examples of their most recent successes and failures\, the panel will answer questions from the audience.\n\nThe Joan Ganz Cooney Center’s Managing Director\, Michelle Miller\, will be moderating this panel!\n\nhttp://schedule.sxsw.com/2015/events/event_IAP39174

SUMMARY:Games and Learning Society Conference 10
DESCRIPTION:The GLS Conference is the premier event in the field of video games and learning. Now celebrating its tenth anniversary\, this grassroots “indie” event continues to be one of the few destinations where the people who create high-quality digital learning media can gather for serious discussion about what is happening in the field and how the field can serve the public interest.  The pre-conference Playful Learning Summit promotes professional development opportunities to celebrate and deepen educators’ use of games in various educational settings\, and fosters collaboration among teachers\, designers\, researchers and others throughout the elementary to higher education continuum.\n\nThe Cooney Center’s Lori Takeuchi will join a panel entitled “The State of the Surveys: Framing and Informing Research on Games and Learning” which will include Michelle Riconscente of New York University and Seeta Pai of Common Sense Media. Barry Fishman of the University of Michigan will moderate.\n\nFor more information\, please visit the GLS Conference website.

SUMMARY:Anytime\, Anywhere Summer Learning
DESCRIPTION:The so called “summer slide” in educational achievement hits young children from low-income families the hardest. Without opportunities to read together with adults\, to practice new skills and to gain exposure to new words and ideas\, far too many young children lose two to three months of reading skills each summer. Scholars have documented that two-thirds of the ninth-grade reading achievement gap can be attributed to this loss in the elementary school years alone.\n\nHow can schools and communities address this troubling and costly phenomenon?  Could well-deployed technology help close the summer learning gap?  Several national organizations and educators are exploring how digital connections may bring new resources to families and help parents tap into affordable and motivating opportunities for their children to experience the joy of reading and learning\, offline and on.\n\nJoin us for a discussion on the impact of summer learning loss and the possibilities for anytime\, anywhere summer learning. This event is co-hosted by New America and the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop in partnership with the National Summer Learning Association and the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading.\n\nLearn more and view the event live on the day of the event on the New America website.\n\nJoin the conversation online using # and following @NewAmericaEd.

SUMMARY:EdWeb Webinar: What We Know About Families’ Use of Educational Media
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, April 16 at 4pm ET\, join us for a free EdWeb webinar featuring Michael Levine\, executive director of the Joan Ganz Cooney Center and Vicky Rideout of VJR Consulting and author of Learning at Home: Families’ Use of Educational Media Use in America.\n\nWebinar Room: http://www.instantpresenter.com/edwebnet16\nRegistration Link: http://www.instantpresenter.com/PIID=EC59DF81814F \n\nAsk any parent about their children’s media use\, and most will tell you they’re interested in media that help their kids learn. But what are parents’ experiences with their children’s use of educational media? Please join us for a webinar\, in which we will share results from Learning at Home: Families’ Educational Media Use in America\, a report from a national survey of over 1500 parents of children ages 2-10.  You’ll hear how children and parents use media together\, overall and by platform\, and also how parents’ media use with their children changes as they get older. We will discuss the report’s findings around these questions:\n\n-Which subjects do parents feel their children are learning the most about from media?\n-Which platforms do they perceive as being most effective?\n-What are some of the obstacles to greater use of educational media?\n-What are childrens’ reading behaviors online and with electronic reading devices?\n\nJoin us on April 16th to learn how you can help support parents in their use of educational media with children\, harnessing the potential of media as digital citizens.\n\nThe webinar will be recorded and archived in the community after the event.\n\nThis webinar is co-hosted by www.edweb.net and Common Sense Media.

SUMMARY:DML 2014
DESCRIPTION:The DML2014 conference calls on all of us to build shared agendas and goals\, to reach across the boundaries that separate our disciplines\, fields\, institutions\, and sectors to re-imagine the where\, when\, and how of educational practice.\n\nOn March 7 at 4pm\, join the Cooney Center for “Creating Youth Builders – Promoting a New Game Design Ecosystem to Engage Hard-to-Reach Youth in Learning.” Game-based learning has emerged as a promising area of innovation in making STEM content\, critical skills\, and systems thinking more engaging for America’s youth (e.g.\, Klopfer et al\, 2009). Furthermore\, a growing body of research suggests that creating video games can be a highly engaging way for youth to learn STEM skills (e.g.\, Robertson & Howells\, 2008). Though the research shows that game design can be used to learn\, the process of engaging non-dominant youth in game design is a challenging one. To begin to understand these issues\, this session will assemble some of the promising and scalable practices that have already engaged thousands of youth globally and in the U.S.  JGCC Industry Fellow Anna Ly will lead a panel of representatives from non-profits\, educational media\, researchers\, and participants of game design.\n\nSee the DML2014 website for more information.
