SUMMARY:Workshop at IDC 2025: Grasping Data: Exploring interdisciplinary approaches for investigating children’s interactions with their personal data
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, June 23\, 2025\, Cooney Center Post Doctoral Fellow for Co-Design Liza Gak will participate in a hybrid workshop at IDC.\n\nUnlike any previous generation\, children’s lives are now highly datafied\, tracked\, and digitally monitored. They are increasingly vulnerable to data collection from seemingly innocuous toys and devices with cameras\, sensors\, voice recognition\, and geolocation. Yet\, children typically lack awareness or control over these data exchanges\, as consent is usually given by adult caregivers (who may also lack data literacy). Despite regulatory improvements\, interdisciplinary approaches remain crucial to empowering children to understand\, value\, and manage their personal data. How can the IDC community involve children in designing and using their personal data? This workshop unites experts to explore current practices.\n\nDespite a growing public awareness of technology’s accelerating capacity to capture\, process and exploit personal data\, this has not been matched by efforts to promote understanding of the myriad ways in which our information is harvested. Children and young people in particular are increasingly exposed to risks through their use of apparently innocuous toys and devices that can generate data from everyday interactions. What methods are being used across IDC to explore children’s understanding of personal data? What steps can we as a community take to ensure children are kept safe and yet have agency over their data?\n\nThe goals of this workshop are:\n\n1) to create an explorative visual mapping of the methods and mindsets currently used by the IDC community around children and personal data and in which contexts.\n\n2) to understand where and how children are being included in research and design concerning their personal data.\n\n3) to converge on a set of principles or a manifesto for the design community to follow on best practice in such contexts.\n\nLearn more about the workshop here.

DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to announce that the Joan Ganz Cooney Center Sandbox for Literacy Innovations call for applications is now officially open through August 29\, 2025. Supported by the Walton Family Foundation\, the Sandbox supports the development of cutting-edge educational technology and media\, grounded in rigorous research and children’s lived experiences.The Sandbox is already showing promising results with its inaugural group of product partners\, including LeapFrog\, Sago Mini\, and LitLab. Participating organizations receive actionable\, research-based guidance through consultation with the Cooney Center’s literacy experts\, engage directly with children in co-design sessions\, and contribute to research that has the potential to shape the future of educational media. In return\, they share insights into product development that inform the Cooney Center’s broader research into how evidence and children’s voices can shape more effective literacy tools. Now\, we’re looking for new partners to collaborate with us in this bold effort. The Sandbox is open to organizations that are:\n 	Developing interactive technology or media supporting English literacy development\n 	Targeting children or youth (ages 3-17)\, for use in school or at home\n 	Focused on the United States market\nThanks to generous underwriting from the Walton Family Foundation\, there is no financial cost for partner organizations to participate in these research and co-design activities.Sandbox partners will be selected through a competitive review process led by the Cooney Center team. Partners must be willing and able to commit to a six-month engagement\, including regular virtual meetings and in-person co-design sessions in New York City\, followed by periodic reporting and engagement for two additional years. SUMMARY:Bridging Reading Science and EdTech: A Framework for Evaluating Early Literacy Tools
DESCRIPTION:Join Angelica DaSilva\, Cooney Center Fellow for and Diane Baty Gifford\, Senior Fellow\, at a poster presentation at AERA.\n\nThis study presents a cross-case synthesis of six EdTech literacy consultation reports conducted by two literacy experts as part of an EdTech for Literacy research grant. Through qualitative coding of consultation reports\, we analyzed how each product aligned with Reading Rope\, included broader implementation supports\, and promoted overall efficacy of the product to support learning to read. Findings revealed consistent gaps in language comprehension\, word recognition\, and implementation features. To support educators\, we introduce the Early Reading Literacy EdTech Evaluation Tool\, a 12-item rubric to evaluate alignment with research-based principles\, emphasizing the need to bridge the research-to-practice gap.
