SUMMARY:DML 2014
DESCRIPTION:The DML2014 conference calls on all of us to build shared agendas and goals\, to reach across the boundaries that separate our disciplines\, fields\, institutions\, and sectors to re-imagine the where\, when\, and how of educational practice.\n\nOn March 7 at 4pm\, join the Cooney Center for “Creating Youth Builders – Promoting a New Game Design Ecosystem to Engage Hard-to-Reach Youth in Learning.” Game-based learning has emerged as a promising area of innovation in making STEM content\, critical skills\, and systems thinking more engaging for America’s youth (e.g.\, Klopfer et al\, 2009). Furthermore\, a growing body of research suggests that creating video games can be a highly engaging way for youth to learn STEM skills (e.g.\, Robertson & Howells\, 2008). Though the research shows that game design can be used to learn\, the process of engaging non-dominant youth in game design is a challenging one. To begin to understand these issues\, this session will assemble some of the promising and scalable practices that have already engaged thousands of youth globally and in the U.S.  JGCC Industry Fellow Anna Ly will lead a panel of representatives from non-profits\, educational media\, researchers\, and participants of game design.\n\nSee the DML2014 website for more information.

SUMMARY:SXSWEdu 2014
DESCRIPTION:If you’re in Austin\, join the Cooney Center at one of the panels that we are presenting. On Monday\, March 3\, Education Fellow Jessica Millstone will be part of “Listen Up! Speak Up! Game Up! A Game Data Discussion” — This panel brings together education\, game development and research experts come for a discussion of the ways games ignite the hunger for learning. You’ll hear the perspectives of parents\, teachers\, and students as well as ideas for leveraging their diverse knowledge and views. Delve into the disconnect between research and practice\, with national data from the Gates Foundation\, Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop\, and Project Tomorrow’s Speak Up Survey results.\n\nOn Tuesday\, March 4\, Michael Levine will present a playground talk\, “#GBL: New Evidence and New Demand or Mostly Hype?” The talk will analyze research and industry initiatives intended to drive engaging instruction and authentic assessment through games-based learning. It will feature findings from a national survey of teachers who use games\, video vignettes of model programs\, and policy recommendations for new investments to reach national education reform goals.\n\nThen join us later that afternoon for “Lost in Translation: Applying the Latest Research” on game-based learning. Drawing on the unique perspectives from investment\, game creation and education experts\, this panel will extract in real time the important takeaways from a new piece of research. We will kick off with a video interview of the report’s author\, discuss the specific study\, provide tips for translating future research and open discussion to the audience.

SUMMARY:Educational Media Use in America: A Breakthrough Learning Forum
DESCRIPTION:On January 24\, the Joan Ganz Cooney Center will host a forum featuring a cross-section of leaders from education\, media\, research\, policy\, and philanthropy at a forum in New York City as we release the results of the first national survey on children’s educational media use. \n\nConducted by the Cooney Center and renowned children’s media researcher Vicky Rideout\, the nationally representative survey of nearly 1\,600 parents of children ages 2-10 will provide a provocative platform for a day of action and discussion. Among the survey’s findings that will be discussed are:\n\n	How much of children’s media time is devoted to educational content;\n	How that varies across platforms\, from television to computers\, video games\, and mobile;\n	Which platforms parents think their children have learned from the most;\n	What obstacles impede children’s educational media use;\n	How much time children spend reading in print and electronic formats\, and why some parents don’t want their children using e-books; and\n	How all of these issues vary based on children’s age\, gender\, and socio-economic status.\n\nThe forum will focus on the practical implications of the national study. Speakers will include FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel; Debra Sanchez\, Senior Vice President for Education and Children’s Content Creation at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; Linda Burch\, Chief Education Officer for Common Sense Media; Dale Kunkel\, Professor of Communication at Arizona University; and David Kleeman\, SVP\, Insights Programs and PlayVangelist\, PlayCollective. Learn more about the Families and Media Project.\n\nView agenda ».\n\nThis event is open by invitation only.
