SUMMARY:Anytime\, Anywhere Summer Learning
DESCRIPTION:The so called “summer slide” in educational achievement hits young children from low-income families the hardest. Without opportunities to read together with adults\, to practice new skills and to gain exposure to new words and ideas\, far too many young children lose two to three months of reading skills each summer. Scholars have documented that two-thirds of the ninth-grade reading achievement gap can be attributed to this loss in the elementary school years alone.\n\nHow can schools and communities address this troubling and costly phenomenon?  Could well-deployed technology help close the summer learning gap?  Several national organizations and educators are exploring how digital connections may bring new resources to families and help parents tap into affordable and motivating opportunities for their children to experience the joy of reading and learning\, offline and on.\n\nJoin us for a discussion on the impact of summer learning loss and the possibilities for anytime\, anywhere summer learning. This event is co-hosted by New America and the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop in partnership with the National Summer Learning Association and the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading.\n\nLearn more and view the event live on the day of the event on the New America website.\n\nJoin the conversation online using # and following @NewAmericaEd.

SUMMARY:Games and Learning Society Conference 10
DESCRIPTION:The GLS Conference is the premier event in the field of video games and learning. Now celebrating its tenth anniversary\, this grassroots “indie” event continues to be one of the few destinations where the people who create high-quality digital learning media can gather for serious discussion about what is happening in the field and how the field can serve the public interest.  The pre-conference Playful Learning Summit promotes professional development opportunities to celebrate and deepen educators’ use of games in various educational settings\, and fosters collaboration among teachers\, designers\, researchers and others throughout the elementary to higher education continuum.\n\nThe Cooney Center’s Lori Takeuchi will join a panel entitled “The State of the Surveys: Framing and Informing Research on Games and Learning” which will include Michelle Riconscente of New York University and Seeta Pai of Common Sense Media. Barry Fishman of the University of Michigan will moderate.\n\nFor more information\, please visit the GLS Conference website.

SUMMARY:Interaction Design and Children 2014
DESCRIPTION:IDC 2014 invites researchers and practitioners to share their work on how technology affects children’s well-being in a global context and how children\, their parents\, teachers\, and peers can contribute to the design of new technology. Researchers and participants are invited to share thoughts on emerging technology\, new theoretical perspectives\, design methods and approaches\, and new understandings of child development by questioning how we can build tomorrow’s technology together. This year’s conference takes places in Aarhus\, Denmark.\n\nFor more information\, please visit the IDC website.

SUMMARY:The 11th International Conference of the Learning Sciences
DESCRIPTION:The theme of ICLS 2014 is “Learning and Becoming in Practice.” Three kinds of practices encompass a range of contexts and processes in which people learn: by engaging in the epistemic practices of disciplines\, by participating in sociocultural practices\, and by engaging in design. Two additional practices will be highlighted pertaining to how we organize our own work as learning scientists: the practices for analyzing and modeling learning across settings and time\, and the practices for designing for scale and sustainability. Additionally\, our own Lori Takeuchi will present as part of the symposium “Mapping the Distribution of Children’s Digital Media Practices: Methodological Innovations and Challenges.”\n\nFor more information\, please visit the ICLS website.
