Translating Literacy Research to Edtech: What We Have Learned to Support Product Development

As the science of reading gains momentum and educational technologies rapidly evolve, developers face a growing challenge: how do we translate decades of literacy research into digital experiences that are engaging, equitable, and instructionally meaningful?

In Translating Literacy Research to Edtech, researchers Angelica DaSilva, PhD and Diane Gifford, PhD share lessons learned from the Joan Ganz Cooney Center’s Sandbox for Literacy Innovations—an initiative that brings together literacy researchers, edtech developers, educators, and children to collaboratively design literacy tools grounded in evidence-based practice.

Drawing from hands-on partnerships with companies including LitLab, LeapFrog, Sago Mini, E-Line Media, and Lirvana Labs, the report explores how developers can move beyond narrow interpretations of the “science of reading” and build products that support the full complexity of literacy development—from decoding and fluency to comprehension, oral language, writing, and learner engagement.

The report includes:

  • A practical overview of key literacy research and common misconceptions about the science of reading
  • Insights into the challenges of translating literacy science into product design
  • Recommendations for developers and designers creating literacy-focused technologies
  • Real-world case studies showing how research-informed collaboration shaped product development
  • Resources and frameworks to support future literacy innovation

At a moment when AI and digital tools are reshaping how children learn, this report argues that meaningful innovation must remain anchored in a deep understanding of how literacy develops—and in collaboration with the children, educators, and families these products are meant to serve.
