You’ll want to check out Ellen Galinsky’s new book Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs, which explores the science of childhood brain development and early learning. Collaborating with top researchers in cognitive science, Galinsky identifies seven life skills, including critical thinking and communication, that foster learning and mastery.
Presented in a highly accessible format, the book provides tips, as well as specific family games and activities for involving kids in their own learning experience. A strong focus of this work is on self-motivation and diverse learning styles.
Lisa Guernsey, of New America Foundation, interviewed the author last week. The event took place at Columbia University’s Teacher College and was hosted by the American Center for Children and Media.
