Studying Youth and Family Learning During the COVID-19 Pandemic at CLS 2021
July 9, 2021
When schools shuttered in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers from dozens of institutions leaped at the opportunity to investigate how the sudden lockdown would alter formal and informal learning as we had come to know it in the United States. Many were as eager to figure out how to study the evolution of learning at home at a time when it was no longer safe to spend time observing or interviewing learners in person. In our symposium…
Reflections from a Participant in the Equity and Inclusivity Workshop at IDC
It is not often that I come across workshops specifically related to the intersection of the design of children’s media and the issues surrounding diverse representations of children, critical race theory, and inclusivity. When I saw the call for proposals to the Equity and Inclusivity workshop at the 2017 Interaction Design and Children conference, I looked forward to attending and meeting like-minded people who care about, study, and create within this intersection. The workshop, co-organized by Kiley Sobel (University of Washington),…

This diverse collective sparked debate around issues facing games and learning and the future of this growing field, and, fittingly, this was the first year games were turned away from the showcase. This year’s conference marked a key shift in its history—no longer was the event focused on the need…

Reflections on CHI 2014
May 5, 2014
Thanks to some fairly frequent conference travel over the past few years, my understanding of what makes up “the world of kids, media, and technology” is constantly expanding and changing. I consider myself incredibly privileged to have the vantage point that comes from traversing many difference academic- and industry-focused circles (just to name one way of slicing up this universe). This past week I attended CHI 2014 (the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems), where the “academic…
