Turning the Page: How We Build Future Readers in the Age of [Constant] Distraction at Culture & Growth Summit

Attention is the scarcest resource of our time. Kids and adults are drifting away from reading for pleasure as the pull of scrolling and endless notifications get stronger. Consequently, concerns around declines in literacy and critical thinking skills are growing.

In this session, David Adams (Urban Assembly), Dr. Angelica DaSilva (Joan Ganz Cooney Center), Asaf Bar-Tura (Literacy Partners), and Adam Clark Estes (Vox) explore what’s really shaping our attention spans today and what it will take to bring readers back. Drawing on their work across early childhood media, literacy advocacy, education equity, and tech journalism, the panel will share what’s helping kids fall in love with reading for the first time, and what’s helping adults rediscover a habit they thought they’d lost.

Attendees will leave with practical, ready-to-use ideas for making reading more accessible and more joyful for the readers we’re raising, and the readers we’re welcoming back.
